Blind Tasting Starbucks Group
January 9
We got together with a semi-random group of Seattleites, mostly new tasters to get into some mischeif with a few really good wines.
The aim was to get to know our palettes better by tasting blind and choosing our favorites. Included in these were our Northern and Southern blends. Because all the wines had great reps we knew there'd be no wrong answers. So here's what we did...
Wines
The following wines were bagged up by an independant party, in anonymous looking bags.
- Two Hands Brave Faces, 2007 (GSM)
- Crozes Hermitage, M. Chapoutier, Les Meysonnier, 2006
- Perin & Fils, Les Binards, 2005 (CdP)
- Domaine Grand Veneur, 2004 (CdP)
- Rotie Cellars, 2007 Southern (GSM) Blend
- Rotie Cellars, 2007 Northern (S/V) Blend
From this auspicious bunch, people were asked to rank their favorites (1 point) descending to least favorite (6 points). When totalled up it scores like golf the winner being the one with the least points. Here is what we came up with...
Results
- 38 Points: Rotie Cellars, 2007 Southern (GSM) Blend
- 58 Points: Two Hands, 2007 Brave Faces (GSM)
- 62 Points: Rotie Cellars, 2007 Northern (S/V) Blend
- 108 Points: Crozes Hermitage, 2006
- 112 Points: Perin & Fils, 2005 (CdP)
- 128 Points: Domaine Grand Veneur, 2004 (CdP)
Now beyond making us smile from such a pleasant result (1 & 3), this was just so much fun! It was also pretty enlightening for all involved, winemaker and budding enophle alike. It allowed us to look at what we liked and why, without the label, the bottle, the packaging and expectations way.
We will definitely do it again, and maybe you'd like to join in. Watch our events page.
